Havelock St extension to complete Wodonga’s inner ring road

The tender to build the Havelock St extension was awarded at the August meeting of Wodonga Council which, once built, will complete the inner ring road around the central business district.

The construction will extend Havelock St from the Huon Hill Tavern through to Osburn St with work due to be completed by June 2017.

“This tender to extend Havelock St is another crucial link in the ongoing transformation of the city’s central business area,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said.

“Roadworks are something that happen in every city, and Wodonga is undergoing major change as it continues to grow at a fast rate.

“They are an important part of creating a city heart where people want to spend time and shop, while also creating smooth travelling routes for commuters.”

The Havelock St extension will cater for single lane traffic in both directions and will have median parking, an on-road cycle lane and footpaths on both sides of the road.

A shared pedestrian-cycle track on the former rail corridor will also be built.

The project is part of the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Funding program, which also includes Richardson Park and The Promenade at Junction Place in partnership with Places Victoria and works in High St.

This will see the completion of the High St reconstruction (including landscaping) and would be from the water tower in High St to the new works in Elgin Blvd, and then from Bond to South streets; as well as the completion of South St between High and Smythe streets, including landscaping.
